Russian tea cakes (or snow ball cookies) are simple and so delicious! I grew up making them every year for Christmas, so they come with a but of nostalgia for me. What are Russian Tea Cakes?
You may have heard them called snowballs or Mexican wedding cakes! They are commonly served around the holidays, and are simple cookies rolled in powdered sugar.
Can I replace the walnuts with something else?
Yup! This recipe also works with pecans.

These classic cookies are only a few ingredients and bursting with flavor!
Ingredients
- 1 cup soft butter
- 1 cup sifted powdered sugar (1/2 set to the side)
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/4 cups flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 F.
- Mix butter, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla thoroughly.
- Separately, sift together the flour and salt, and slowly mix into the butter mixture until evenly mixed.
- Mix in nuts until evenly distributed.
- Roll dough into 1" balls and place on a baking sheet at least 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until they are set, but not brown.
- While still warm, roll in the powdered sugar you set aside earlier. Cool. Roll in sugar again.
